Introduction

Summer is here, and this is when the City of Manassas seems to come alive the most. There are more events, more festivals, more evenings outside, and more opportunities for the community to come together. It is personally my favorite time of year.

Even on a slower weekday, you are still likely to find something happening in Historic Downtown Manassas. With children out of school, I also appreciate how much the community prioritizes creating local events that families can enjoy together. There is nothing quite like a small town during the summer season.

This guide features the major summer events in Manassas that are worth attending with the whole family. Exact dates and details may change each year, so be sure to check the official event page before attending.

Historic Manassas Railway Festival

The Historic Manassas Railway Festival is one of the city’s biggest summer traditions and a fitting event for a place shaped by its railroad history. Historic Downtown Manassas fills with model-train displays, railroad memorabilia, vendors, food, music, and activities for children.

One of the most popular parts of the festival is the VRE excursion train ride from the Manassas Railroad Depot to Clifton and back. The festival itself is free, but excursion tickets must be purchased separately and can sell out. In 2026, the festival celebrated its 32nd year.

Usually Held: Early June

 Manassas Bee Festival

The Manassas Bee Festival is one of the more unique summer events in the city. Held at Liberia House and Grounds, the festival focuses on bees, butterflies, native plants, and the important role pollinators play in the environment.

The day usually includes live music, food trucks, local vendors, children’s activities, farm animals, wagon rides, educational demonstrations, and opportunities to explore Liberia House. Families can learn something new without the event feeling overly educational or formal, which makes it a good choice for children.

Usually Held: June

Cost: Free admission; food and purchases cost extra

Good For: Families, gardeners, nature lovers, children, and anyone interested in pollinators

First Fridays in Historic Downtown Manassas

First Fridays are one of the best ways to experience Historic Downtown Manassas during the summer. The streets become more active in the evening, with live music, family activities, restaurant specials, and people walking between local shops and businesses.

The summer dates have a lively block-party atmosphere, but each month feels slightly different depending on the theme.

Location: Historic Downtown Manassas

Cost: Free admission; food, drinks, and purchases cost extra

Celebrate America

Celebrate America is Manassas’ annual Fourth of July celebration and one of the biggest summer events held in Historic Downtown Manassas. The afternoon includes food and craft vendors, family activities, and plenty of people gathering downtown before the fireworks begin after dark.

We attended Celebrate America as a family, and it gave us a chance to experience one of the city’s largest traditions for ourselves. Rather than only describing the event, I filmed our visit so you can see what the crowds, activities, and overall atmosphere were like throughout the day.

Usually Held: July 4

Location: Historic Downtown Manassas and the Manassas Museum Lawn

Cost: Free admission; food and purchases cost extra

Good For: Families, fireworks, food, community celebrations, and spending Independence Day downtown

Official Information:  Celebrate America

Summer Sounds at the Harris Pavilion

Summer Sounds brings free live music and community performances to the Harris Pavilion throughout the summer. The schedule usually includes a mix of acoustic performances, local bands, military ensembles, dance nights, and other entertainment.

This is less of a one-day festival and more of an ongoing summer tradition. It works well for a casual evening downtown because you can stop for dinner, listen to music, and walk around without needing to plan an entire day around the event. The exact performers and weekly schedule change each year.

Usually Held: June through August

Location: Harris Pavilion, 9201 Center Street

Cost: Most performances are free

Good For: Live music, date nights, families, dancing, and casual evenings downtown

Official Information:  Summer Sounds at the Harris Pavilion

National Night Out

National Night Out is one of the summer events we have personally attended, and it was a great experience for both me and my daughter. The event brings local families together with the Manassas City Police Department, firefighters, first responders, community organizations, and local businesses.

There were activities for children, demonstrations, food, and plenty of tables to visit. The event was completely free, and my daughter left with a bag full of goodies. It felt less like a formal public-safety event and more like a relaxed community night where children could have fun while meeting the people who serve the city.

National Night Out is also meant to strengthen the relationship between residents and first responders while encouraging safer, more connected neighborhoods.

Usually Held: The first Tuesday in August

Location: A designated City of Manassas location; confirm the current venue before attending

Cost: Free (everything)

Good For: Families, children, meeting local first responders, community resources, and free summer activities

Official Information: National Night Out

Manassas African American Heritage Festival

The Manassas African American Heritage Festival is one of the city’s longest-running cultural events. For more than three decades, the festival has brought the community together to celebrate African American art, history, music, food, and culture.

The festival includes live performances, dance groups, vendors, educational exhibits, a health fair, a classic car show, and plenty of food. It draws thousands of visitors each year, so this is one of the summer events worth planning ahead for rather than treating as a quick stop. Bringing a lawn chair is also a good idea if you plan to stay near the performance stages.

Usually Held: The first Saturday in August

Location: Metz Middle School, 9950 Wellington Road

Cost: Free admission; food and purchases cost extra

Good For: Families, live music, cultural history, food, shopping, and community connection

Official Information: Manassas African American Heritage Festival .

Salvadoran Festival

The Salvadoran Festival brings music, dancing, food, crafts, and live entertainment to the Harris Pavilion for a celebration of Salvadoran and wider Latin American culture. It is one of the larger cultural events held in Manassas during the summer and gives families a chance to enjoy traditional performances while trying food from across Central America, Mexico, and South America.

The festival is organized by the Salvadoran American Council and is designed to bring different parts of the community together through culture, food, and art. It is free to attend and returned for its seventh year in 2026.

Usually Held: August

Location: Harris Pavilion, 9201 Center Street

Cost: Free admission; food and purchases cost extra

Good For: Families, live music, cultural performances, food, and supporting local artists and businesses

Official Information: Salvadoran Festival

Which Summer Event Should You Choose?

The best summer event in Manassas depends on the kind of experience you are looking for.

The Historic Manassas Railway Festival is the best choice for families interested in trains, local history, and a full day downtown. The Manassas Bee Festival offers a quieter outdoor experience with nature, animals, and activities for children.

Celebrate America is the strongest option for a traditional Fourth of July celebration, especially if you want fireworks, food, and a large community gathering. First Fridays and Summer Sounds are better for a casual evening downtown without having to plan an entire day around one event.

National Night Out is a good choice for families with young children because it is free, welcoming, and filled with community activities. The Manassas African American Heritage Festival and Salvadoran Festival are the best options for live performances, cultural traditions, food, and experiencing the diversity of the Manassas community.

Final Thoughts

Summer is when Manassas feels the most active. Between the festivals, concerts, community nights, and events in Historic Downtown Manassas, there is usually something happening throughout the season.

What I appreciate most is the variety. Some events are built around local history, while others focus on culture, music, food, or simply giving families something fun to do together. Many are also free, which makes it easier to enjoy the city without having to plan an expensive day out.

Exact dates, locations, and event details may change each year, so check the official organizer’s page before attending. This guide will continue to be updated as the city’s major summer events change.
